How would you feel if you were the cause of someone you loved being accused of murder? Novelist Hank Harmon couldn’t get the notion out of his head as he stared at the morning papers which showed artist Dina Denning heading into the police precinct.

It all began with a book he’d written about her…

Jordan leaned back against the headboard. Was he really this much of a bastard to capitalize on Darcy again, to use her a second time? Not liking the thought, he let his anger surface. Hell, why shouldn’t he? She’d seduced him—which he was still fucking dreaming about—as a ploy to stop his book and get her revenge. Wasn’t he entitled to a little of his own?

Jordan was on page ten of a story which poured out of him when his cell rang. It could be his mother. Grabbing the phone off his night stand, he checked the ID and clicked on. “Morning, Mom. How are you?”

“Not so well, honey. I’m a bit shaken up. Is there…is there any way you could come home for a few days?”

His heart started to thrum in his chest. “Of course I can. Tell me what’s happened.”

“I’m at the hospital. I’m fine, but I was…well, beaten up.”

Oh dear God. “Beaten up? Are you…by whom?”

“The burglars I told you about. They hit the farmhouse.”

The image of his mother hurt by thugs had him surging off the bed. “Wasn’t Walt with you?”

“Yes, he was beaten, too. Jordan, I need to see you,” She started to cry then, and his throat clogged. Tears were not a part of his mother’s repertoire.

“I’ll catch a plane out of Boston today. I promise. Meanwhile, don’t go home alone.”

“The doctors want to keep me overnight for observation. And Tommy’s been here after school and through the night, sitting at my bedside.

“Tell him not to leave you alone until I get there. Which hospital?”

“I’m at Memorial in Rockland.”

“I’ll be there before you know it. Mom, I love you and don’t worry. I’m here for you.”

“You always are, honey.”

Jordan clicked off and for a moment, he was immobilized. His mind whirled with images of his beloved mother black and blue by some--his gaze caught on the flowers again. “No,” he said aloud. “It couldn’t be connected. Could it?”

Dismissing that notion for now, he closed his computer and punched in numbers on his cell phone to get a reservation to upstate New York. One thing Jordan knew was how to do was take care of his mother. If nothing else, he’d been a good son.
